There are frequent times throughout the year where I find myself frustrated with my photography. In fact, I have been remiss with updating my blog due to a lack of inspiration since my last shoot in October with Eddy at The Padre.

I attended a workshop at the end of October in search of new techniques, or something to spark my creativity, but my results during the workshop were less than marginal.  The one thing I did take to heart was to add some more drama to my photos, as Mikey put it, "your images are really clean."   I then scheduled a shoot with Gabby attempting to create more emotive images with drama, but just couldn't pull it off.

At that point, I postponed shooting for the remainder of November knowing I was traveling back to Bellefonte for Thanksgiving. This trip I decided I would shoot some film of PSU and Bellefonte using my Dad's Rollei and several rolls of 120mm film; some Black and White, some Color and one roll of Fujichrome.

Since November of 2009 I've been in contact with John, a Penn State College Professor and photographer,  and we decided we would shoot together at least once while I was there.  Last year I purchased an Apollo Softbox and light stand to leave at our Bellefonte house so I would only need to bring my camera and a flash.

I drove to John's house in State College and spent several hours photographing PSU Senior Karisa.  I had a blast working with Karisa and tried numerous lighting styles.  We produced some pretty decent images both outside and in John's studio.

Before we left to head home, I did a quick family portrait shoot with Teresa's best friend Lori and her two daughters.  Again, pretty simple lighting, Apollo Softbox with an SB-900 triggered via Nikon CLS.  I was surprised how well CLS worked in the bright daylight inside the soft box, even when receiver of the SB-900 was not visible to the pop-up flash.
What Did I Learn:

  • I brought my heavy backpack, but in the end I only needed my D700, 24mm-70mm G lens and my SB-900 to accomplish a majority of the shoots

I definitely needed the break to just shoot around without any set goals, or expectations.  I came back feeling rejuvenated and ready to try something different.
