Underworld Ballerina

Another photographer I follow, that specializes in Dance Photography goes by the name of Peddecord Photography. I believe he is a member of the Salt Lake City Ballet company and has plethora of athletic dancers at his disposal. Unfortunately, I tried to solicit a couple ballet studios to allow me to photograph their students with no luck. I asked Gabby if she would be willing help me with trying to capture similar style images knowing in advance that she is not a ballet dancer.

While communicating with Gabby, I noticed she had a really cool Halloween costume and asked her to bring it along for our shoot. We met at a friend's studio, HyeStyle Studio, I decided we would shoot the ballet images using natural light, thanks to a roll-up door in the studio. I hung my white muslin from the roll-up door and setup a flash to provide some fill.  We played around with some more emotive images and then also did some action images.

We then switched to Gabby's Halloween costume, which was based on Underworld.  Simple lighting, Einstein Stripbox for key and an Einstein with barndoors for Rim.  My friend Teresa helped by using her fan to blow Gabby's hair in a couple of the shots.

What Did I Learn?
  •  I really needed to bring a third light to help provide some additional fill, especially since Gabby's outfit is all black.
  • Although Gabby did an excellent job with some of the jumps, I really needed someone trained in ballet.  My buddy John worked with a dancer when I was in State College, and they have a certain body awareness, which extends from their hand positions down to their feet

Above is a Behind-The-Scenes lighting configuration for the very top image.
